From Medicine to Mahamudra: A Translator’s View of the Living Tradition
KARL BRUNNHOLZL, 2021
Karl Brunnhölzl speaks with Tim Olmsted about his path from physician to translator, his training with Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche in Kathmandu, and what makes Mahamudra well-suited to people with ordinary lives and day jobs. He reflects on Khenpo's insistence that students sing the teachings in their own languages — rooted not in modern experiment but in the tantras themselves — and offers a clarifying reframe on how recognition arises: the path works on obscurations, not on Buddha nature, which can only be revealed. His practical gauge for whether practice is working: less self-seriousness, more compassion.

This interview is part of the Voices of Mahamudra course.
