A Lawyer’s Fearless Leap to Tibetan Buddhism

Former corporate lawyer Ari Goldfield recounts ditching the bar exam aftermath for Dharamsala in 1994, where he learned Tibetan, became Khenpo Tsültrim Gyamtso Rinpoche’s secretary and translator, and immersed in sutra, mantra, and essence traditions. He unpacks Mahamudra’s four recognitions — appearances as one’s own, emptiness, spontaneous presence, self-liberation — as a path to relax into luminous mind, drawing from Tulku Urgyen and Mingyur Rinpoche. Blending psychotherapy with Dharma, he stresses melting rigid self through devotion, kindness, and subtle body work like lujong, while navigating guru devotion as a two-way heart connection, not blind leap.
